Augmented Reality Devices - the HoloLens

In April 2016, thanks to its affiliate in the USA, MMCLD became one of the first companies in Australia to receive the Microsoft HoloLens.  Receipt of two Microsoft HoloLens Development Editions, gave MMCLD early access to explore the power of this device.

MMCLD was able to transfer our 25 plus years of experience in the design and development of interactive training into the creation of AR samples in the Hololens. This involved integrating the UX / UI capability, along with the power of Maya, Unity 3D and MMCLD’s programming capability.

MMCLD produced a number of highly interactive training components within the HoloLens such as:

  • standardised firearms training for State Police using a Glock 17 pistol,

  • a naval weapon system demonstrating the cycle of operation, and

  • a rack of IT equipment that allows learners, both operators and maintainers, to view the rack and its equipment as a hologram, select the individual pieces and access relevant information on each item.

Since then, MMCLD has worked on numerous training scenarios where the HoloLens can be effectively deployed as a next generation training solution for both Defence and Non-Defence Clients.

In addition to the HoloLens capability, MMCLD has also worked with the Apple Augmented Reality platform to understand the comparative value of both solutions for our clients. As part of this comparative assessment, MMCLD has been able to make the same AR solution work on both platforms by providing two UI and UX designs; we believe this type of approach is essential to ensure our client’s choices for platforms can be met.
